Russia Blocks WhatsApp to Promote State-Backed Messaging App MAX
Russia has severed access to WhatsApp for over 100 million users, redirecting them to MAX, a state-controlled messaging platform developed by VK. The move, effective immediately, mandates VPN usage for WhatsApp access while positioning MAX as the default communication tool.
Critics argue the Kremlin aims to centralize digital surveillance. "Trying to isolate users from private communication is a backward step," WhatsApp stated, alleging Russia prioritizes control over security. The government counters that compliance with local laws WOULD restore access.
From September 2025, all smartphones sold in Russia must come preloaded with MAX—a policy mirroring China's WeChat model. The clash underscores growing tensions between global tech firms and sovereign digital ecosystems.
